Loss and Love: Making sense of grief

Grief is one of life’s hardest challenges, something none of us can fully avoid. Losing someone or something you love can hit you unexpectedly hard, no matter how prepared you think you are.

What is Grief?

Grief is a natural response to loss—it’s how we process what’s happened and begin to heal. While it’s most often linked to losing a loved one, grief can show up in many situations: the end of a marriage, estrangement from a family member, the death of a beloved pet, or even the loss of a dream or a way of life.

You may have heard of the “Five Stages of Grief”—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These stages, introduced by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, help explain some of the emotions people go through. But grief doesn’t follow a neat timeline. You might move through these stages in your own way, revisiting certain emotions or skipping others entirely. That’s normal.

How Grief Feels

Grief affects everyone differently, but here are some feelings you might recognise:

  • Numbness or disbelief, as if the loss isn’t real.

  • Deep sadness, loneliness, or emptiness.

  • Guilt or regret about things left unsaid or undone.

  • Anger or frustration—at yourself, others, or even the situation itself.

  • Anxiety or fear about the future, or feeling untethered and uncertain.

  • Physical exhaustion, aches, sleep troubles, or changes in appetite.

Grief can be unpredictable—one moment you feel fine, and the next, a memory or song brings everything back. That’s part of the process.

When to Reach Out

Grieving is a deeply personal journey, but you don’t have to face it alone. If your emotions feel too overwhelming or seem to linger longer than you’re comfortable with, talking to someone can help. Grief therapy offers a safe space to process what you’re going through and find your way forward, step by step.

Remember, there’s no “right” way to grieve. Whatever you’re feeling, it’s valid—and with time and support, healing is possible.
